Osaka’s districts offer a network of unique atmospheres, with each pocket boasting a distinct personality that attracts locals and travelers alike. Just a few stops from bustling Umeda, Nakazakicho emerges as a peaceful enclave—a refreshing departure from the skyscrapers and urban rush, capturing a slice of Osaka’s pre-modernized essence. At first glance, Nakazakicho may seem like an ordinary residential neighborhood, tucked away and familiar only to its residents. Yet, as we ventured through its winding alleyways and quiet corners, we discovered a nostalgic townscape filled with retro shops, cozy cafés, and an understated charm that attracts visitors from all over the Kansai region.
In this edition of Every Station Ever, we share some of our favorite discoveries from Nakazakicho.
Kantipur - Curry Paradise, Courtesy of Nepal

No journey begins without a satisfying meal, and Kantipur, a Nepalese gem nestled in Nakazakicho’s shopping arcade, was our first stop. The restaurant’s open-air ceiling and lush greenery immediately set the mood, with the chef preparing meals in full view, heightening the anticipation of the culinary adventure ahead.

The curry was a revelation—rich in flavor and paired with naan that struck the perfect balance between airy, crispy, and chewy. Kantipur’s menu staples are complemented by daily specials, and today’s highlights included a savory homemade cottage cheese and eringi mushroom curry alongside a tantalizing chicken and green onion curry. It was a meal that filled both the stomach and the soul.
Bamboo Club - The Most Homey Jazz Café in Town

With hearts and stomachs full, we wandered over to Bamboo Club, a jazz café like no other. Housed in a repurposed family home with over three generations of history, Bamboo Club envelops visitors in its cozy ambiance and warm hospitality. Although we initially came for the coffee, we found ourselves captivated by the live jazz performance, a background soundtrack that quickly stole the spotlight.

The soulful melodies of Ms. Kaoru Azuma, accompanied by piano, cello, and trumpet, elevated our café experience to an unforgettable level. Between sets, the musicians and staff mingled with patrons, inviting us to join in the music. It was a serendipitous, community-driven experience, undoubtedly the highlight of our visit.
Planet +1 Plus Studio - Reviving All the Classics

A gem for film aficionados, Planet +1 Studio is Nakazakicho’s tribute to classic cinema. As enthusiasts of Kansai’s independent theaters, we were delighted to find this cinema specializing in timeless films rarely screened elsewhere. From “Run for Cover” (1955) to Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps” (1934), and even the original “King Kong” (1933), Planet +1 offers a diverse program that transports viewers across cinematic eras and genres. It’s a must-visit for anyone keen to deepen their appreciation of film history and discover the nuances of yesteryear’s silver screen.
Yama Store - Found Art, or Thrifting?

Finally, no tour of Nakazakicho would be complete without a stop at Yama Store, an eclectic thrift shop that stands apart in Japan’s vibrant secondhand scene. A marvel of curated chaos, Yama Store brims with furniture, trinkets, and clothing that at first appear familiar, yet on closer inspection reveal unexpected reworkings and artistic touches. These are not merely secondhand items but carefully reimagined pieces, each imbued with new life and individuality. Yama Store embodies the intersection of nostalgia and innovation, offering a shopping experience that feels as much like an art gallery as it does a thrift store.
Nakazakicho may not have the flashiness of Osaka’s more commercial districts, but its charm lies in this very contrast. It’s a haven for those seeking a deeper, more nuanced encounter with the city’s history and culture. Through its eclectic mix of retro cafes, artisanal shops, and vintage gems, Nakazakicho serves as a reminder that even in a city as modernized as Osaka, there are pockets of time and tradition waiting to be explored. For anyone looking to experience the Kansai region from a more intimate, artful perspective, Nakazakicho is a stop not to be missed.
