Every Station Ever: Omihachiman

Boating, Beering, and Mountaineering

Omihachiman, a hidden gem located in Shiga Prefecture, is a convenient day trip’s distance from Kyoto and offers an enchanting blend of history, charm, and tranquility that transports visitors to another era. Nestled between the picturesque shores of Lake Biwa and the rolling hills of Mount Hachiman, this town beautifully captures the essence of traditional Japan. As you step into Omihachiman, you'll be greeted by streets lined with Edo-period architecture, where wooden facades, stone canals, and timeless shrines convey tales of the past.

Once a thriving mercantile hub, Omihachiman retains its old-world charm, with the Hachiman-bori Canal serving as a testament to its vibrant history. This town invites you to explore its winding paths at your own pace, free from the hustle and bustle of the more crowded tourist spots. Whether you're drifting lazily down the canal, sampling craft brews at a local brewery, or soaking in panoramic views from the mountaintop, Omihachiman offers a perfect escape for those seeking peace and adventure alike.

Hachiman-bori Canal Boats

Settle in for a serene journey along the Hachiman-bori Canal, where you can immerse yourself in the heart of Omihachiman's historic district. As the boat glides gently through the waterways, you'll be treated to views of quaint stone bridges, traditional wooden houses, serene shrines, and local residents waving as you float by. Each season paints the landscape with a different palette, from the vivid hydrangeas of summer to the fiery autumn foliage and delicate cherry blossoms of spring.

If you don’t catch the ferry time slot you were hoping for, don’t worry. There is a restaurant with picturesque outdoor seating just a few feet from the boarding area that offers Shiga beef udon, Japanese curry, and cold refreshments for those waiting for their boat to come in.

Two Rabbits Brewing

We couldn’t believe that a craft beer brewery could exist dead-center in the middle of such a traditional quarter, but you know we were happy that it does. Two Rabbits Brewing is a safe-haven for beer lovers who need to catch a breather during their countryside escapades.

In spite of their suburban setting, Two Rabbits Brewing offers a diverse selection of beers that rival those found in Kyoto's bustling pubs. From rich stouts to crisp pale ales and refreshing lagers, each brew promises a unique taste experience.

ALL of the beers hit the spot, but we personally loved the ginger beer the most.  With a rotating selection of seasonal cans adorned with eye-catching and quirky designs, you'll definitely find something to take home as a souvenir. Two Rabbits Brewing is the perfect stop for a refreshing break or to stock up on goodies for your journey.  And, if you like your brews with a side of exercise, you are the perfect candidate for the Two Rabbits Brewing monthly Running Club! Follow them on instagram for more info on joining those wild hares.

Hachimanyama Ropeway

To cap off the day, we hopped on the Hachimanyama Ropeway for a non-stop trip to cloud nine. This aerial jaunt offers a breathtaking perspective of Shiga Prefecture, with sweeping views of Lake Biwa and the surrounding countryside. At the summit, you'll find locals and travelers enjoying the serene atmosphere, chatting, exploring, and paying tribute to the fluffy and gregarious cats that preside over the mountain.

The ropeway provides a peaceful pause in the day, encouraging you to slow down and appreciate the beauty of nature and the town's tranquil rhythm. Omihachiman is a place where time seems to stand still, inviting you to explore its hidden corners and embrace a day of relaxation and discovery.

Omihachiman is more than just a top Kyoto day trip recommendation; it's a journey into Japan's timeless beauty and charm. When you visit, be sure to let them know that KABIN sent you!
