Nyan Nyan Cat Temple (猫猫寺): A Feline Paradise for Cat Enthusiasts

Translating directly to "Meow Meow Temple," Nyan Nyan Cat Temple is a haven for cat lovers. Junko Kaya, the matriarch of the family behind this unique establishment, described its creation as a natural progression. In 2016, with the collective efforts of her family, a centuries-old temple was transformed into this whimsical feline sanctuary.

What awaits at this purr-fect destination?

Everything a cat enthusiast could imagine. Even before stepping inside, visitors encounter a tree adorned with votive tablets, each inscribed with heartfelt prayers for their beloved cats. Once through the entrance, guests are welcomed by a gift shop brimming with cat-themed souvenirs.

Venturing further, visitors will find an on-site palm reader and the temple’s “living room,” where a television broadcasts news—by cats, for cats. Around the corner, a unique cat-inspired Buddha shrine offers traditional goshuin (temple stamps) and omikuji (fortune slips), all with a feline twist.

A highlight of the temple is the basement art museum, entirely dedicated to cat-themed works. The gallery features both in-house creations and pieces by external artists, including famous reimaginings such as the “Monyalisa” (a playful version of the Mona Lisa), with artist names cleverly altered to feline puns like "Leonyardo Nya Vinci."

In essence, Nyan Nyan Cat Temple is an irresistible destination for any cat lover—a must-visit for those in the area.
