Despite the infamously humid climate and occasional typhoons, summer in Japan is arguably the best time to be in the country. The daylight lasts longer, swimming in the rivers and seas feels phenomenal, and just about every city and town has its own summer festivals for all to enjoy.

While revelling in the heat with the hotaru (fireflies), here are a few words and phrases to make your summer nights even sweeter.

日光浴 (Nikko Yoku): Sunbathing
Nikko yoku wo suru to sukoshi genki ga deta.
I felt a bit better after bathing in the sun.

花火大会 (Hanabi Taikai): Fireworks Festival
Kono aida no hanabi taikai wa kondeita kedo, totemo kirei datta.
The firework festival that happened the other day was crowded but really pretty.

夕焼け (Yuyake): Sunset
Taifuu ga owatta ato no yuyake ga suteki.
Post-typhoon sunsets are splendid.

梅雨 (Tsuyu): Rainy Season
Tsuyu wa roku gatsu kara hajimaru.
Rainy season begins in June.

紫陽花 (Ajisai): Hydrangea
Tsuyu ni naru to ajisai ga saki hajimeru.
Hydrangeas will start blooming during the rainy season.

森林浴 (Shinrin Yoku): Deep Forest Bathing
Nayamigoto ga aru toki wa, shinrin yoku shite kangaeru no ga osusume.
I recommend thinking while deep forest bathing whenever you have something you are not sure about.

水光 (Suiko): Light reflected off the surface of water
Ferri no tenbo dekki kara suiko o miru no ga suki.
I like looking at the sparkling sea from ferry observation decks.

足湯 (Ashi yu): Public Foot Bath
Ashi yu wa hotondo muryo da to omou.
I think that most public foot baths are free of charge.
