KYOTO in April: The Heart of Tradition and Culture

Heian-Era Poetry Gathering at Kamigamo Shrine

KAMIGAMO SHRINE
April 13, 2025 | 13:00

While cherry blossoms steal the show in April, Kyoto also brings history to life in the most poetic way possible. If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into the refined world of Heian-era court culture, Kamo Kyokusui no En at Kamigamo Shrine is as close as it gets.

Inspired by a lavish poetry gathering held in 1182 by Priest Shigeyasu, this annual event transforms the shrine’s moss-lined gardens into a scene of pure elegance. Crimson umbrellas and fresh spring blooms decorate the grounds, and in the heart of the winding stream, poets sit in quiet anticipation. As young children send small boats of sake drifting down the water, poets compose tanka (5-7-5-7-7) verses, their ink brushes gliding over paper in a dance as old as Kyoto itself.

The melodies of the koto harp and flute fill the air, adding another layer of nostalgia. When the final works are ready, a priest gathers them to be read aloud in the shrine hall, a dedication to the kami spirits. It’s an afternoon of history, artistry, and pure Kyoto magic.
